Turn-a-SurPrise is full of witty, handle-operated automata by NEIL HARDY and PETER LENNERTZ.

Once again it's our pleasure to welcome you to attend our latest show of automata, that irresistible crazy field of surreal creatives occupied by the dropouts and detritus of this world…

Turn-a-SurPrise is full of witty, handle-operated automata by NEIL HARDY and PETER LENNERTZ. At least three of Neil's designs, and six of Peter's, are brand new, unseen in public before.
See attached e-flyer for dates, etc. which has click-links* to more in-depth information. Once the show is up, we intend to post more pictures, and maybe an animated version or two.

We've already had great fun turning the handles of, and being surprised at, all these products of Neil and Peter's warped minds and unfathomable sense of humour, and hope you will, too.

Look forward to seeing you within the next 3 weeks.

Honey Bees are suffering huge loses Worldwide!
We need to help our Solitary Garden Bees to pollinate our garden & allotment fruit, vegetables & flowers.
They are very docile & do not normally sting.
They do not live in hives!
Their habitat was mainly rotten logs & old lime mortar walls which have been reduced as we achieve our neat & tidy gardens.. now they are desperate for our help to give them nesting sites.

This talk & demonstration will show you how to make nesting boxes from recycled materials and the plants that will encourage these cute bees to your garden.
Just add a few nesting boxes & a few bee-friendly flowers to increase their numbers, before we lose them!
You can still have a neat garden & help the bees!

Presented by Eastleigh Transition Network (http://www.etnet.org.uk/), as part of the O2 Think Big Project (http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/Projects/Project-Home/?clubId=827) and Plan Bee (http://www.co-operative.coop/corporate/ethicsinaction/takeaction/planbee).

Friday 9th September - Green Film: Home
home-moveStarting at 8:30pm at The Art House, we are screening Home, a 2009 documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

The film is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet. The documentary chronicles the present day state of the Earth, its climate and how we as the dominant species have long-term repercussions on its future.

A theme expressed throughout the documentary is that of linkage—how all organisms and the Earth are linked in a "delicate but crucial" natural balance with each other, and how no organism can be self-sufficient.
The Art House is at 178 Above Bar Street, SO14 7DW.
Film is by Magic Hat (by donation; so please give generously!)

Lymington Positive Living Group

Lymington Positive Living Group is a new group, open to everyone interested in personal development, spiritual growth and creating global harmony. We meet in the community centre every Tuesday evening from 6th September 2011, doors open 7.15pm, start 7.45pm- finish 10pm.

There will be guest speakers and occasionally a practical workshop to share inspiration and incentives that may lead you to live a healthier, more vibrant life, and perhaps even finding your bliss. It will also be a great opportunity for you to meet like-minded people, make friends and have a social get together. In essence it is the uniting of people who hold possible answers with those who have questions. Another aim of the group is to promote community living so wherever possible a local person will be the guest speaker.

Come and join us each week for an evening of enlightenment!

The Arts and Climate Change Event

The Arts and Climate Change Event
Romsey Memorial Park - Saturday 16th July from 10.30am

The Arts and Climate Change Event is a participative, community event being put on by TTR as part of the Arts Festival. The aim is to see climate change positively - i.e. as an opportunity to be creative in the light of the challenges posed - and the arts are a fun and engaging way to demonstrate this.

From 10.30am there will be artists running workshops on making creative things from recycled materials/rubbish (please bring discarded toys which will become sculptures thanks to mod roc), and everything made will be incorporated into the drama which will evolve as the day progresses.

Karl Hibbert has been working with Romsey Youth Theatre, a community dancer, Mountbatten School and Green Buttercup, on creating a field of "creative creatures" (the result of climate change) and a piece of physical theatre which will have a voiceover narrative telling the story of the triumph of regeneration over waste.

Everyone attending will be invited to join the procession around the park which will assemble at the Bandstand at 1.30 and move off around 2 pm (the VIPs are arriving then - they will be met by me at the TTR stand).

Gordon Clark of The Lantern Theatre has put together a Junk Band which will accompany the procession and also go round town with the Town Crier during the morning.

There will be displays of art from recycled materials by Romsey Young Carers and also the drawings from Heather Butler's "Sketchathon" around town in the morning, which is part of the event, will be on show.

Romsey Ladies’ Choir will send off the procession with a set of songs from the Bandstand; when it returns there will be a performance of the slaying of the monster of rubbish (which we hope will have acquired some more in its travels as people will be invited to attach stuff to it) and the Ladies' Choir will end with another set of songs culminating in (we hope) a community rendition of the TTR song "Turn The World Around".

The whole thing will be photographed by a budding young photographer, Bex - we hope there will be pictures in the library later.

All the "creative creatures" will be recycled into TTR's Carnival float the next day.

We desperately need extra bodies from 10am to help put up gazebos and generally help out should there be a rush of people and the artists running workshops can't deal with them all.

We don't have a face painter as such but we do have an experienced stage make-up artist who is willing to work with anyone who wants to join in.

Stewards needed - please contact Mavis on 01794 515529 if you can help. Steward tunics will be provided.

Just turn up and present yourself at the TTR stall from 10am if you want to help.

On 16th April 2011 Mottisfont Abbey are opening a brand new Contemporary Art Gallery!

On 16th April 2011 Mottisfont Abbey are opening a brand new Contemporary Art Gallery!

The gallery will showcase work of various mediums by artists from the mid 20th Century to today, including the likes of Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and John Piper, Peter Blake, Paula Rego, Gavin Turk, Tessa Farmer, Rob Ryan and many more. (See our programme summary attached.)

We are currently looking for volunteers to come and help us run the gallery. Acting as gallery guides and occasionally helping out with previews, exhibition sales and gallery administration.

Volunteers can give as little or as much time as they wish. Even one day every fortnight is enough. For this, not only will they get invaluable experience and a great addition to CV's, but also get the chance to work in fantastic surroundings and with a professional art and heritage team. Travel expenses (by the mile) and tea, coffee and cake are provided. (If you volunteer for over 50 hours you also automatically get free membership to the National Trust and 20% discount in all our shops and restaurants)

I wondered if you might be willing to distribute the attached e-flyer advertising a recruitment day which we are holding in Southampton and Winchester on Wednesday 16th March. This is the first stage in trying to build up a team of creative individuals who can help run the gallery space and its exhibitions and events. If people cannot attend the recruitment day, we are happy to talk to them in person at another time. We will happily post you a hard copy of the flyer too but as I'm sure you understand, the more help and support we can get with this project the better. Your assistance with spreading the word about the gallery and our search for volunteers would be most appreciated.

If you have any questions about the recruitment event or the project more widely or want to know more about the exhibitions lined up for this year please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you in advance for you support.

Kind Regards,

Lotte Inch

An invitation to local writers, at various stages in their career, to make their own response to a new exhibition

‘Land Sea Sky’
An Invitation to Make a Written Response
The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre will host this beautiful exhibition of traditional landscapes from 20th May to 10th July 2011.
Focussing primarily on rural and coastal landscapes, highlights include a stunning selection of works bequeathed to Hampshire County Council by artist Nick Schlee, seascapes from internationally renowned artist Richard Eurich, a series of Hampshire landscapes by artist Annabel Gault and work from a range of Hampshire based artists.  Collectively, the exhibition explores the wide range of creative approaches by artists fascinated by re-interpreting and re-presenting the landscape.
We’re inviting local writers, at various stages in their career, to make their own response to the artworks.  Selected pieces of poetry and prose will be brought together and reproduced in collections to enrich the viewing pleasure of visitors to the Gallery for the duration of the exhibition; an anticipated audience of 5000 visitors.
If you would like to participate, you can send an expression of interest by email to the Exhibitions Curator.  You will then be forwarded two randomly selected images of art work that will appear in the exhibition, including title and artist.  You may write a response to one or both, although you are not obliged to continue with the process.
This project is open to writers aged 18 years and over.  Written responses may be in the form of poetry or prose.  Poems should be a maximum of 30 lines.  Prose pieces should not exceed 1500 words. Writers may submit a maximum of two pieces each.
The deadline for completed work, to be sent by email, is midday on Thursday 28th April
A team of Arts and Museum staff will select the writing to be included in the collection, and the writers will be informed.  Copyright will remain with the writer.  We hope that you’ll participate in this exciting collaborative writing project and  be inspired by the artworks.  Thank you.
Kindest regards, Angela
