On 16th April 2011 Mottisfont Abbey are opening a brand new Contemporary Art Gallery!

On 16th April 2011 Mottisfont Abbey are opening a brand new Contemporary Art Gallery!

The gallery will showcase work of various mediums by artists from the mid 20th Century to today, including the likes of Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and John Piper, Peter Blake, Paula Rego, Gavin Turk, Tessa Farmer, Rob Ryan and many more. (See our programme summary attached.)

We are currently looking for volunteers to come and help us run the gallery. Acting as gallery guides and occasionally helping out with previews, exhibition sales and gallery administration.

Volunteers can give as little or as much time as they wish. Even one day every fortnight is enough. For this, not only will they get invaluable experience and a great addition to CV's, but also get the chance to work in fantastic surroundings and with a professional art and heritage team. Travel expenses (by the mile) and tea, coffee and cake are provided. (If you volunteer for over 50 hours you also automatically get free membership to the National Trust and 20% discount in all our shops and restaurants)

I wondered if you might be willing to distribute the attached e-flyer advertising a recruitment day which we are holding in Southampton and Winchester on Wednesday 16th March. This is the first stage in trying to build up a team of creative individuals who can help run the gallery space and its exhibitions and events. If people cannot attend the recruitment day, we are happy to talk to them in person at another time. We will happily post you a hard copy of the flyer too but as I'm sure you understand, the more help and support we can get with this project the better. Your assistance with spreading the word about the gallery and our search for volunteers would be most appreciated.

If you have any questions about the recruitment event or the project more widely or want to know more about the exhibitions lined up for this year please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you in advance for you support.

Kind Regards,

Lotte Inch

An invitation to local writers, at various stages in their career, to make their own response to a new exhibition

‘Land Sea Sky’
An Invitation to Make a Written Response
The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre will host this beautiful exhibition of traditional landscapes from 20th May to 10th July 2011.
Focussing primarily on rural and coastal landscapes, highlights include a stunning selection of works bequeathed to Hampshire County Council by artist Nick Schlee, seascapes from internationally renowned artist Richard Eurich, a series of Hampshire landscapes by artist Annabel Gault and work from a range of Hampshire based artists.  Collectively, the exhibition explores the wide range of creative approaches by artists fascinated by re-interpreting and re-presenting the landscape.
We’re inviting local writers, at various stages in their career, to make their own response to the artworks.  Selected pieces of poetry and prose will be brought together and reproduced in collections to enrich the viewing pleasure of visitors to the Gallery for the duration of the exhibition; an anticipated audience of 5000 visitors.
If you would like to participate, you can send an expression of interest by email to the Exhibitions Curator.  You will then be forwarded two randomly selected images of art work that will appear in the exhibition, including title and artist.  You may write a response to one or both, although you are not obliged to continue with the process.
This project is open to writers aged 18 years and over.  Written responses may be in the form of poetry or prose.  Poems should be a maximum of 30 lines.  Prose pieces should not exceed 1500 words. Writers may submit a maximum of two pieces each.
The deadline for completed work, to be sent by email, is midday on Thursday 28th April
A team of Arts and Museum staff will select the writing to be included in the collection, and the writers will be informed.  Copyright will remain with the writer.  We hope that you’ll participate in this exciting collaborative writing project and  be inspired by the artworks.  Thank you.
Kindest regards, Angela
